Kazakhstan concerned over events in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan

MOSCOW, June 15. The events in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan caused concern in Kazakhstan, Kazakh foreign minister Kasymzhomart Tokayev told an international business conference of the Asian Community in Almaty on Wednesday.

"Kazakhstan is prepared to provide any assistance that Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan may need because we are loyal to the idea of regional cooperation," Tokayev said, recalling that "in 1998 three states - Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan - signed the agreement on internal friendship and cooperation".

He said that he was closely following all the events happening in these states. "Kazakhstan values long-term relations with all these states and considers that our future and our destiny should be common within the framework of our common market and within the framework of the Union of Central Asian States proposed by the Kazakh president," he said.

Delivering his annual state-of-the-nation address in the parliament February this year, Kazakh president Nursultan Nazarbayev offered Central Asian states: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to form a union. He did no rule out a possibility of the accession of other states in the region to the Union. The creation of the Union does on provide for the unification into a single state.

Currently, five former Soviet republics - Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Russia are members of the Organization of Central Asian Cooperation (OCAC).The main aim of this interstate association is the creation of a common market, transnational corporations designed to improve the state of regional cooperation. An Afghan delegation attended as an observer the latest meeting of the heads of OCAC member-states held in the autumn of last year.
