Cooperation will help Russia-EU dialogue - official communique

SZCZECIN (Poland), June 10 (RIA Novosti) - The Council of the Baltic Sea Countries intends to help the development of the dialogue between Russia and the European Union through intensifying cooperation at different levels, the communique, which was adopted by the Council session participants in Poland on Friday, says.

"In connection with this, the Council welcomed with satisfaction the results of the Russia - European Union summit that took place in Moscow on May 10 and hailed those positive results, which the adoption of the road maps on four common spaces of Russia and the European Union, and the future entry of the Russian Federation into the WTO will have for the region," the document says.

The communique points out that one of the main aims of the organization is to remove barriers hampering cooperation and to strengthen the principles of legality, transparency and respect for human rights, which will help most efficiently use the resources and will contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the region.

"The Council underscored the importance of raising the image of the Baltic region as an area attractive for investments," the session participants underscored.

They also noted the necessity of increasing the efficiency of the transport network in the context of increasing trade flows between Central and Eastern Europe.

"The Council welcomed the continuing efforts in removing the barriers for developing trade, investments and tourism in the region. It emphasized the need of the further development of coordinated actions in such spheres as fight against corruption, and improvement of conditions for business and for innovation technologies in the region," the adopted document says.

At that session, the representatives of the Council of the Baltic Sea Countries also pointed out the importance of environment protection in the Baltic region.

The next session of the Council at the level of ministers will be held in Malmo (Sweden) in June 2007.
