Moscow, June 6 (RIA Novosti) - The Palestinian authorities' decision to put off the parliamentary election was met with understanding in Moscow.

The Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Head of the Palestinian National Administration (PNA) Mahmoud Abbas had issued a decree on June 4 postponing the parliamentary election, scheduled for July 17, referring to the necessity to complete an electoral reform before the event.

The new date of the election will be determined later, after implementing a number of legislative procedures discussed by the Palestinians, including amending the effective law on elections of 1995.

"Moscow met the decision with understanding," the Foreign Ministry stated.

The ministry said that the free and transparent parliamentary election within the constitutional framework would become an important stage of the PNA's democratic reforms to ensure normal living conditions, stability and the rule of law in Palestine and have a positive impact on the Israeli-Palestinian settlement.

Russia will continue efforts for the PNA to become an independent state that would coexist with Israel in peace and safety.
