German dancer of Russian origin wins ballet competition in Helsinki

HELSINKI, June 4 (RIA Novosti, Olga Andrianova) - German dancer of the Russian origin Daniil Simkin, 18, won the international ballet competition in Finland's capital Helsinki on Friday.

He won the grand-prix worth 10,000 euros.

Simkin was born in Novosibirsk (Siberia) in 1987 to a family of ballet dancers. In 1990 the family emigrated to the West.

Having worked in a number of European theaters, the Simkin family settled in Wiesbaden (Germany) where Daniil danced on the professional stage for the first time.

Simkin won the first prize at the 2nd international ballet competition in Austria in 2000, which marked the first serious achievement in his ballet career.

More than 90 young dancers from over 30 countries took part in the ballet competition in Finland which opened on May 25, the Finnish National Opera and Ballet said.

The participants performed in two age categories: 15-18 and 19-25. Male and female dancers competed separately. The program included classic ballet and modern dance.

Winners in the first age group won prizes worth 3,000, 2,000 and 1,000 euros and winners of the second age group - 7,000, 5,000 and 3,000 euros.

Female dancers from China, Hungary and the United States and male dancers from Hungary (1st place) and the U.S. became winners in the first age group.

Female dancers from Ukraine, Lithuania and the U.S. and male dancers from China and Kazakhstan (the 2nd place) became winners in the second age group.

Helsinki hosted the international ballet competition for the 5th time. Previous competitions were held in 2001, 1995, 1991 and 1984.

Varna (Bulgaria), New York and Jackson (U.S.), Moscow (Russia) and Paris (France) hosted the competitions, as well.
