MOSCOW, June 1 (RIA Novosti, Kristina Rodriges) - Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, who is responsible for issues related to women and children, is concerned about the situation with homeless children in Russia, she stated in a phone interview with RIA Novosti in connection with the celebration of the International Children's Day.

According to the Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General, Russia desperately needs funds allocated on child development programs.

In addition, Maud de Boer-Buquicchio is concerned about the general situation in orphanages and the shortage of teachers there. "The Russian Government acknowledges the existence of these problems," she said.

She believes it is necessary that the government increase the allocation of funds on children's programs. She also stands for a more intensive development of programs aimed at work with children of drug-addicts and alcoholics.

Maud de Boer-Buquicchio pointed out "in general, the situation with children in Russia has improved." There are positive developments, including the growing participation of private citizens in the care programs for Russian children, she added.
