BISHKEK, May 30 (RIA Novosti, Yulia Orlova) - The Kyrgyz-Uzbek border in the Fergana Valley returned to normal functioning, a spokesman for the Kyrgyz border forces said.

"Border units deployed in the south of the republic have been transferred to routine service to ensure safety of the Kyrgyz-Uzbek section of the border," the spokesman said.

The situation is stable in the region. However, law enforcement bodies, task forces and border guards will continue to conduct joint operations.

On May 13, Kyrgyzstan closed the border with Uzbekistan soon after the Uzbek government suppressed a popular uprising in the eastern city of Andizhan (with a population of 300,000 people).

The majority of Uzbek refugees fled to the Osh region, in southwestern Kyrgyzstan, where ethnic Uzbeks account for 50% of the entire population.

According to Tashkent officials, 173 people were killed during clashes initiated by radical Islamic extremists from the local department of the international Islamic Liberation Party terrorist organization, Hizb-ut-Tahrir.

In connection with the events of May 13 in Andijan, the Prosecutor General's Office of Uzbekistan brought charges of organizing terrorist acts, threatening the system of government, hostage taking, mass disorders and other offences.

Out of 98 people detained on suspicion of organizing terrorist acts, 52 were arrested.

International human rights organizations said over 1,000 people had been killed.

At present, 470 out of 527 inmates, who had been released from prison during the turmoil, voluntarily came back to serve their term. Fifteen men were returned to jail by force. The authorities put the rest on wanted list.
