RUSSIAN MPs SEE ANY FALSIFICATION OF WWII RESULTS AS INADMISSIBLE

MOSCOW, May 27 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's lower parliamentary chamber, State Duma, adopted Friday a resolution on the inadmissibility of falsifying the results of WWII.

Russian MPs are protesting against the increased number of pronouncements by their Baltic and Polish counterparts distorting history and offering their own "corrected" versions of the causes and results of the Second World War, says the resolution.

"The most regretful fact is that these statements have appeared now when the world is observing the 60th anniversary of the historic victory over Nazism, with a crucial contribution from the peoples of the Soviet Union supported by the anti-Hitler coalition allies," emphasizes the resolution.

Russian deputies are also critical of those matching the Soviet Union with accomplices in unleashing the war.

The Duma makes a reminder that the war began not with the signing of the so-called Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact in 1939 but with the 1938 Agreement, called Munich Pact, which enabled Nazi Germany to dismember Czechoslovakia and unleash the war.

As to current appeals to Russia, including from the European parliament, to repent of the occupation of the Baltic states, the Russian deputies claim they are hypocritical and cynical.

Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, who visited Moscow on May 9 on the occasion of V-Day celebrations, demanded that Russia condemn the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.

On May 10, President Vladimir Putin came up with the statement that he considered the problem settled after the resolution of the 1989 Congress of People's deputies which condemned the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.

The latter is a set of secret protocols to the 1939 Soviet-German treaty on non-aggression, which laid down a detailed division of the spheres of influence between the Third Reich and the USSR. Thus, Russia gained as a sphere of its influence the Baltic republics, Western Ukraine and Western Belorussia. This non-aggression treaty was concluded for 10 years but was violated by Germany on June 22, 1941.

In the opinion of MPs, all compensatory claims upon Russia are unseemly and intended to profit by it. They are also critical of the US Senate's having adopted on May 20 a resolution demanding that the Russian government bring apologies for the illegitimate occupation of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

The State Duma has called upon the MPs of all European states to declare against any attempts rehabilitating Nazism and distorting history and to outlaw all forms of ethnic, racial and other forms of discrimination inadmissible in the Europe of the third millennium.
