CSTO POWER AGENCIES NOT TO BE USED FOR SETTLING INTERNAL CRISES

MOSCOW, May 24 (RIA Novosti) - The coalition forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) will not be used for settling internal political cries in CSTO member states, CSTO Secretary General Nikolai Bordyuzha said at a press conference on Tuesday.

"An internal political crisis is not an aspect to be dealt with by a foreign aggression. This is a domestic affair of each state, a result of political struggle. Each country should cope with it by itself," Bordyuzha said.

According to him, the CSTO can only use its political potential to prevent pressure of street democracy on authorities as it recently happened in some former Soviet republics.

"This potential should be used to bring all aspects of political struggle back into the constitutional field," he stressed.

The problem of the use of CSTO coalition forces emerged after the public turmoil and revolution in Kyrgyzstan in March 25. This issue was raised after the April unrests in Andizhan which left 169 people killed, according to the official data.

The Collective Security Treaty was signed in May 1992. The CSTO includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.

The treaty stipulates that CSTO member-states will begin joint consultations and take relevant measures if sovereignty of one of them is in danger.

If one of CSTO countries faces an aggression of a foreign country, this will be considered aggression against all the CSTO members who will render the attacked country military and other assistance.

The decision to use armed forces to rebuff aggression is made by CSTO heads of state.
