INDIA'S PRESIDENT VISITS MOSCOW WITH AN EXTENSIVE PROGRAM

MOSCOW, May 22 (RIA Novosti) - During his visit to Moscow, India's President Abdul Kalam will discuss a wide range of issues, from regional security to military-technical cooperation with Russia.

According to a RIA Novosti source in Moscow's diplomatic circles, the sides will focus on the agenda of Russian-Indian relations. "It is the first visit of an Indian President to Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The fact speaks of the high level of our relations at present," the source emphasized.

During the visit, Abdul Kalam will also discuss the issues of scientific and military-technical cooperation between the two countries, the source said.

The sides are expected to touch upon the situation in the South Asia. According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko, Moscow welcomes the development of the Indian-Pakistani dialogue on the whole range of bilateral issues. "The determination of New Delhi and Islamabad to maintain the course toward the peaceful solution of controversial issues and to prevent terrorism from interfering with this process gives us a lot of hope," Yakovenko said.

During the talks, the sides will also discuss the partnership between Russia, India and China. The meeting of the foreign ministers of the three countries is scheduled for June 2 in Vladivostok.

The working program of the Indian President's visit starts on Monday, May 23. It includes various meetings with the Russian leadership.

On Monday, the Indian President will also visit the Sukhoi design bureau, the Institute for Eastern Studies under the Academy of Sciences, the Russian Academy of Sciences, where he is supposed to receive the title of honorary professor, and deliver a speech to the students of the Moscow State University.

On Tuesday, Abdul Kalam will visit the Mashinostroyenie scientific-production enterprise, which manufactures Brahmos supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles jointly designed by Russian and Indian experts.

On Wednesday, the Indian President will travel to St. Petersburg to visit the India Hall at the Hermitage State Museum and the Institute of the Arctic and the Antarctic.
