ULYANOVSK, May 11 (RIA Novosti, Lyubov Chilikova) - Vladimir Kochetkov, a geography teacher from the village of Surskoye (the Volga area) made a third bicycle tour of the United States.

The tour began in March. It took the traveler less than two months to cover 6,000 kilometers on the territory of 12 states.

The purpose of the tour was to explore US national parks, Death Valley, Monument Valley, Redwoods, and Badlands. "The country has 350 national parks. They not only preserve nature but also carry out education activities," Kochetkov told RIA Novosti.

The traveler visited the universities in Flagstaff (Arizona) and Missoula (Montana) and a college in western Colorado.

Vladimir Kochetkov was highly interested in ecological issues. He attended an ecological roundtable at the university of Flagstaff. The sides discussed contacts with the university of Ulyanovsk, exchanges of students and teachers and joint work, including the Pure Water project.

"Students from Missoula where cycling is highly popular want to make a similar tour of Russia," Kochetkov said.

A Bicycle Week took place in Missoula after his departure, he reported. Those who rode this ecologically pure transport during this week could have lunches in cafes and receive goods in shops free of charge. "Unfortunately, the Russian authorities do not support those who take care of ecology," Vladimir Kochetkov said.

His trip was sponsored by the regional and district administration. It was a part of the Mir project which Kochetkov launched in 1998. Last year he took his pupils on a bicycle tour of the United States.

In summer the teacher and schoolchildren are planning a similar trip to Europe.
