The opposition made an attempt to change the existing legislation stipulating that a written permission of the Latvian president is needed to wear military uniform and awards of foreign countries.
In spite of the prohibition, Latvian veterans always wear uniform, orders and medals on May 9. No sanctions were imposed on them.
At a Thursday press conference Latvian ambassador to Russia Andris Teikmanis called not to pay attention to this bill.
"Mind what is really happening. Veterans wear their medals and nobody blames them," the ambassador noted.
According to him, Nazi and Soviet symbols are prohibited in Latvia. "However, someone will bring portraits of Stalin or hammer and sickle symbols. But nobody arrests them," Teikmanis stressed.
