POLITICAL HEAVYWEIGHT JOINS PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN IN KYRGYZSTAN

BISHKEK, May 4 (RIA Novosti, Yulia Orlova) - Leader of the Kyrgyz party Ar-Namys (Dignity) Felix Kulov was nominated for Kyrgyz presidency. His candidacy was unanimously approved at the gathering of Bishkek residents on Tuesday night, the party's staff reported on Wednesday. The former vice president of Kyrgyzstan, ex-mayor of Bishkek and governor of the industrial Chuiskaya region, the former national security minister and an opposition leader, Felix Kulov was sentenced to ten years of imprisonment in 2002.

He was found guilty of embezzling state funds in 1993-1997 when he had headed the Chuiskaya region.

On the first day of the revolution Kulov was released and started supervising the work of Kyrgyzstan's power structures. He said he was ready to return to prison as soon as order was restored in the country. After his nomination for presidency, Kulov stopped supervising the power structures.

Kulov has not yet filed his registration application as presidential candidate to the Kyrgyz Central Election Commission.

Three candidates for presidency have already filed their applications to the CEC. In compliance with the law on elections, on May 7 they will undergo a Kyrgyz language test which will be broadcasted live.

Moreover, they have to deposit a pledge worth $2,500 and collect 50,000 signatures for their support.

People can be nominated for presidency till May 26. The Central Election Commission will finish the registration of candidates at 18.00 on June 13. Nominees will be able to withdraw their candidacies till June 29.

The presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan are scheduled for July 10.

Eleven politicians have officially announced their intention to run for Kyrgyz presidency. Among them are acting President Kurbanbek Bakiyev, Dr. Zhenishbek Nazarliyev, leader of the Social-Democratic Party Almaz Atambayev, former minister of ecology and emergencies Temirbek Akmataliyev, leader of Kyrgyzstan's democratic movement Zhypar Zheksheyev, deputy of the Kyrgyz parliament Bayaman Erkinbayev and vice president of the international congress of industrialists and entrepreneurs of the CIS, Baltic and Eastern European states Akbaraly Aitikeyev.
