PRESIDENT PUTIN CONGRATULATES PARTICIPANTS OF QUASAR-NETWORK PROJECT

MOSCOW, May 1 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a congratulatory message to the participants of the Quasar VLBI network project, announced the press service of the Russian president. "I congratulate you on the completion of the work on the construction of the Quasar global radiotelescope," the message says in particular.

The message states, "this advanced technology project has been successfully implemented through effective and inspirational work of a large group of scientists, engineers and construction workers from various regions of Russia."

"I hope the operation of the complex created with the use of the latest technologies will give a strong impetus to the researches in the sphere of astronomy and implementation of various global projects in Russia," the message says.

The Quasar radiotelescope is a unique astronomical instrument for researches of the Earth and the Universe. It consists of three radio observatories with a 32-meter radiotelescopes each. The observatories are located in the north-east of Russia (near St. Petersburg), in the Northern Caucasus (Zelenchukskaya village), and near Lake Baikal (Siberia).

The set of radio observatories, covering 12 million square meters of Russia's and CIS territory, is incorporated by communication channels with Control and Data Processing Center (placed in St. Petersburg) into an integral system.

The Quasar complex allows conducting researches of the structure of the Universe; monitoring asteroid movements, shifts of the continents, and the condition of the global oceans; predicting earthquakes and tsunami.
