RUSSIAN ECOLOGISTS DETAINED IN BUDAPEST

MOSCOW, April 26 (RIA Novosti) - Russian ecologists detained in Budapest for staging an unsanctioned rally are likely to be fined, says the Russian foreign office information department.

"Police report that the Russian citizens have been arrested for staging an unsanctioned rally and violating the rules of passage into the government building. Legal proceedings that are underway are likely to end with a fine punishment," says the foreign ministry. "The water, soil and deer antlers that the defendants carried on them were checked as to radioactivity; it was proved to be normal."

On April 26, the Budapest police arrested three Russian citizens, members of the Ecozashchita (Ecoprotection) organizaiton: Vladimir Slivyak, Gosman Kabirov and Ramis Faizulin. They claim to have tried to meet with Hungary's prime minister to discuss the import of nuclear fuel waste into Russia.
