BRUSSELS, April 19 (RIA Novosti's Alexander Shishlo) - An exposition, 60th Great Victory Anniversary: The Battle in the East, opened today at the Royal Museum of the Army and Military History in Brussels.

The show takes up a thousand square meter area to display more than seventy photographs, military maps and documents pertaining to principal battles of the Great Patriotic War, 1941-45. Photographs offered by RIA Novosti make the exposition bulk.

The Royal Museum and the Russian Embassy to Belgium organized the event in tandem.

World War II was the most destructive ever fought throughout history. It comes as convincing proof of unity and shared dedication to democratic values being the earnest of European security, Ambassador Vadim Lukov said in an opening address.

"Today's Europe does not need attempts to counterpoise its West to East, nor calls for geopolitical rivalry. What it needs is all countries' firm unity in the face of the latest global threats," the diplomat pointed out.

The opening gala gathered Andre Flahaut, Belgium's Defense Minister, the host country's parliamentarians, researchers and cultural activists, OSCE countries' ambassadors, and Russian and Belgian Resistance veterans.
