MOSCOW, April 11 (RIA Novosti's Sergei Gorbunov) - Askar Akayev has confessed that he is very glad that his resignation from the post of the Kyrgyz president has been settled.

"I am in high spirits. At last, the Kyrgyz parliament has accepted my resignation after a week of consideration. It is a load off my mind," Akayev said in an interview with RIA Novosti when asked about his reaction to the decision.

On Monday the parliament accepted Akayev's resignation after amending a law to deprive him of the status of the first president.

It is essential that the decision grants him the status of an ex-president, according to the Kyrgyz Constitution, he said.

"It gives some certainty to me and the green light to legitimate presidential elections in July 2005, which is most important," Akayev claimed.

"I was worried most of all that after the abolition of benefits, privileges and the law on the first president they wanted to take a decision which would create a loophole for impeachment. Such decisions might have exacerbate the situation in the country, complicated as it is," Akayev was quoted as saying.

He believes that the new date of presidential elections fixed for July 10 absolutely complies with the Constitution.

"In accordance with the Constitution, new elections are due within three months after the president's voluntary resignation," Akayev remarked.
