RUSSIA-IRAN: CUSTOMS SERVICES MAKING CLOSER CONTACTS

TEHRAN, April 10 (RIA Novosti, Nikolai Terekhov) - Alexander Zherekhov, Russia's Federal Customs Service chief, and Massoud Karbasian, his Iranian counterpart, signed a memorandum today on mutual understanding and cooperation in customs activities.

The document determines further action of an interstate customs agreement, made in Moscow, 1998, and ratified by both parliaments, informants in diplomatic circles said to Novosti.

The memo signed today envisages closer bilateral contacts, and information exchanges on whatever Russian and Iranian customs legislation amendments thus to streamline bilateral trade.

The Parties have agreed for expert exchange and training to enhance personnel proficiency and juridical knowledge.

"From the legal point, the situation is quite acceptable for Russian and Iranian customs services to cooperate," Zherekhov remarked at the signing ceremony.

He expressed satisfaction with the state of Iranian customs terminals, and their compliance with global standards.

"Russo-Iranian trade has attained a level that makes both countries' customs services seek closer cooperation," Karbasian remarked, in his turn.
