MOSCOW, April 6 (RIA Novosti) - "The Naked World" show opened at Moscow's RuArts gallery, yesterday. It offers photographs by Spencer Tunick of the USA, one of the world's most controversial artists for today. He came into the limelight in 1999 by making naked men and women lie in city streets and squares by the thousand in every part of the world. It's hard to say their photos are erotic-he makes human flesh look like biomass. Then, Mr. Tunick, expert showman, is evidently not so much after scandal as after public mind manipulation, remarks the Moscow-based daily Novye Izvestia.
With his live compositions, the artist liberates townspeople from fetters of civilization to remind them that this world is a fragile and vulnerable thing, and extols natural human beauty. Such is general opinion.
What he is doing is not a show but part and parcel of gallery culture, Spencer stresses.
Known for conceptualist endeavors-performances and collages, the American celebrity gathered close on seven thousand in Barcelona to sit for him naked. A similar installation attracted 4,500 models in Australia.
If he is invited to repeat the performance in Moscow, he will gladly do it, says Spencer Tunick.
