WASHINGTON, April 5 (RIA Novosti's Arkadi Orlov) - The George Bush-Victor Yuschenko statement on a possibility of cooperation between the United States and Ukraine in antimissile defense "is nothing more than a political declaration", RIA Novosti quotes chairman of the Duma international committee Konstantin Kosachev as saying.

Noting that it was made summing up the talks in the White House, Kosachev said: "Yuschenko's visit to the United States is, on the whole, political by nature and is seen in the United States as public support for the new Ukrainian authorities".

For its part, Kiev also makes similar statements, for instance on antimissile defense, so as to gain support from the Bush administration, Kosachev thinks. In his opinion, in the event of progress made in this sphere "Ukraine will have to play a passive role" as an element of the American project.

As regards realization of would-be antimissile defense agreements between Ukraine and the United States, it is too early to speak of them now, Kosachev said. Whatever use of the territory of Ukraine, Poland or the Baltics, for the ends of antimissile defense may have a destabilizing effect, which in real fact does not meet the national interests of the United States in this part of the world, Kosachev added.

The chairman of the Duma committee is now in Washington for presentation of the analytical magazine Russia Profile, published in Russia in English, telling of the political, economic and social processes under way in Russia.

To Kosachev, Americans have shown much interest in the new magazine, of which RIA Novosti is a co-founder.
