MOSCOW, April 2 (RIA Novosti) - The advance team of the Russian Emergencies Ministry's rescuers has launched search and rescue operations on Nias Island to help those wounded during the earthquake, the ministry's press service told RIA Novosti.

The team comprises rescuers of the Central Airmobile Rescue Detachment stationed in Zhukovsky (Moscow region), RIA Novosti's interlocutor said.

According to him, the team is currently searching for a site for an airmobile hospital.

"The main team comprising medics and medical equipment is staying at Medana airport and will be taken to Nias by helicopters," the spokesman said.

Yesterday Russian rescuers failed to reach Nias because of weather conditions.

The earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale hit Indonesia last Monday.
