VITALY MUTKO ELECTED NEW PRESIDENT OF RUSSIAN FOOTBALL UNION

MOSCOW, April 2 (RIA Novosti) - The elections of the new president of the Russian Football Union took place at an extraordinary conference of this organization on Saturday.

Vitaly Mutko, Anzor Kavazashvili, Mikhail Zhukov and Alexander Tukmanov were nominated for this sport. However, Zhukov and Tukmanov withdrew their candidacies before the voting.

All in all, 99 people took part in the voting and 97 ballot papers were found valid. Only one person voted for Kavazashvili and the rest gave their votes to Mutko. Mikhail Zhukov withdrew his candidacy on Saturday taking into account Mutko's big financial possibilities and the coincidence of their election programs. Alexander Tukmanov, general director of the Russian Football Union, withdrew his candidacy on Friday "for personal reasons."

Vitaly Mutko was nominated by the St. Petersburg Football Federation. The football federations of Russia's Northwest, the Southern Federal District, the Leningrad region and Moscow backed his candidacy.

According to the new president of the Russian Football Union, it should become an open and powerful organization. Mutko assigns priority to the progress of the Union and believes that its program should be realistic.
