VORONEZH, March 27 (RIA Novosti) - The city zoo in Voronezh (450 kilometers to the south of Moscow) celebrates the Day of Bear Awakening, announced organizers of the event from the Voronezh regional branch of the Youth Unity organization.

According to leader of Voronezh branch of the Youth Unity organization Yelena Vyaznikova, "the idea of the festivities was born as an analogue of the Groundhog Day widely celebrated throughout the United States every year. Bear is a symbol of Russia. Currently, bears in forests in the central part of Russia wake up from a long winter's nap, which basically symbolizes the end of winter."

Bear cub Umka and two female bears - Mashka and Simona - currently reside at the Voronezh zoo. By the way, Umka was presented to Voronezh residents by Russian Minister of Emergencies several years ago during his visit to the city. Now, according to zoo officials, it has grown up to become a beautiful and strong bear with good appetite and friendly character.

Yesterday, Youth Unity representatives set up tents near the zoo, organized shows of children performance arts groups, various games and trivia contests. Visitors of the zoo (mainly children) treated bears with sweets and fruits.

"We intend to approach new deputies of the Voronezh City Duma elected on March 20, 2005, with a legislative initiative - to make the Day of Bear Awakening an official holiday in the city," the Youth Unity representatives told RIA Novosti.
