RUSSIAN RESCUE DEVICE FOR TOWERING INFERNO

MOSCOW, March 25 (RIA Novosti) - EXPO 2005 in Nagoya, Japan, will see a sensational inflatable rescue device for skyscraper fires. Brainchild of Russia's Lavochkin space research-cum-production company, the Spasatel (Rescuer) uses space-oriented technologies to remove people and valuables from any skyscraper story, however high up, in case of fire or any other emergency. A company spokesman offered Novosti a wealth of impressive details.

"The exposition will offer a life-size pneumatic model of the device, complete with a human dummy. A plasma screen nearby will show a video footage of Spasatel tests," said our informant.

A flame-consumed highrise leaves no chance to the people inside. The American tragedy of September 11, 2001, proved that as a terrorist attack hit the WTC twin towers in New York City. Now, the pioneer Russian device allows people in fatal danger to get out the window. "No special training is necessary to use the thing. It takes an instant to get it going, and protects one from heat and hitting against the wall while getting down."

When folded, the Spasatel is just a small bag. "You put it on your back like a knapsack, secure a breast lock, sit on the window-sill, back first, and pull the breast handle to inflate the device. It turns into a solid conic thing, not unlike a huge badminton shuttlecock-and there you are, safe inside it as in a bed protected from all sides, to parachute down."
