RUSSIA TO REFORM ARMY'S INFORMATION-TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEM BEFORE 2010 - SERGEI IVANOV

MOSCOW, March 24 (RIA Novosti) - Before 2010 Russia is to thoroughly improve the quality, capability and efficiency of the army information-telecommunication system on the basis of state-of-the-art technologies, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov has said. He was speaking at a sitting on Thursday of the Defense Ministry collegium, says the ministerial press communique, which has come to hand at RIA Novosti.

This will be done "through fulfillment of the Comprehensive Target Program of Work on Step-Wise Switchover of the Primary Communication Network of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation to Digital Telecommunication Equipment", he said.

"Not only the primary communication of the army and the navy but also other components of the communication system will adopt digital technologies. For that the General Staff has promptly to wind up the preparation of documents within the framework of the State Armaments Program for 2006-2015", Sergei Ivanov said.

In turn, Colonel-General Yevgeni Karpov, deputy chief of the General Staff for automatic control systems, communication and radioelectronic warfare, voiced proposals on the development of the present information-telecommunication component of the control system of the armed forces.

According to the ministerial press service, such work is done within unfolding the United System of State Administration, as said at the collegium. The power structures' control system will preserve independence and will on their own meet their specific goals, the press release says.
