MOSCOW, March 22 (RIA Novosti) -At the EXPO-2005 to be opened in Japan on March 25, Russia's Lavochkin design bureau is to display a unique inflatable device to rescue people from burning multi-story buildings.

"This Rescuer designed according to space technologies is meant to promptly evacuate individuals or precious cargo, entrapped on any floor of a multi-story building, say, during a fire or in any other distress or emergency," said a Lavochkin bureau expert.

"We shall demonstrate a vast pneumatic mock-up with a man's dummy inside as well as a film showing Rescuer tests on a plasma screen," he said.

The events in the United States on September 11, 2001 when terrorists simultaneously attacked two multi-story building have shown that if a formidable fire sweeps such buildings people have no chance to survive.

"The insiders either jumped down to death from the windows or suffocated with smoke because traditional ways of evacuation turned out to be cut off," said the expert.

In such conditions people should have got a real chance to save themselves-that is a reliable vehicle for leaving the premises through a window. "This device ought to require no special skills, to enable one to use it instantly and to protect during descent from bumps against the walls of a building or from exposure to high temperature," specified the expert.

The folded Rescuer is a kind of a small knapsack. In an emergency, one puts it on the back, claps the breast lock, sits down on the window-sill with one's back to the street and pulls down the handle on the breast surface.

"When pulling the handle, you switch on the system of automatic gas-filling, thus shaping the device into a cone and making it rigid. It resembles a huge badminton shuttlecock. The person to be rescued will appear to be lying in a cradle in the bottom, well-protected from all the sides," noted the expert.
