GEORGIAN COAST GUARD DETAINS RUSSIAN TANKER

TBILISI, March 20 (RIA Novosti, Marina Kvartskhelia) - The Georgian Coast Guard detained a Russian tanker on Sunday near the coast of Adzharia for violation of shipping rules.

Sources in the Georgian department of state border protection told RIA Novosti that Russian tanker Samara City lowered a boat in a restricted area and was detained by Georgian frontier guards.

According to Georgian legislation, the owner of the tanker was fined 50,000 lari ($25,000). He has to pay the fine within a month; otherwise, his vessel will be confiscated. The owner also has the right to appeal in local courts and protest the actions of Georgian frontier guards.

At present, Samara City is detained at the port of Batumi.
