MOSCOW, March 19 (RIA Novosti) - Moldova's decision to pay compensation to veterans of World War II, who fought with Nazi Germany, has aroused deep regret and resentment.

"We resent Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin's decision to offer compensation on the 60th anniversary of victory over Nazism to all veterans of the war, no matter what party they fought with," the Russian Foreign Ministry's Information and Press Department stated.

"This measure of the Moldovan authorities insults the memory of millions, who paid a high price for the deliverance of USSR republics, including Moldova, from the Nazi enslavement," the ministry stressed.

The ministry recalled last summer's celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Yassy-Kishinev operation, which resulted in the complete liberation of Moldova from the Nazi occupants.

"Less than half a year after the celebration the country's authorities suddenly decided to pay the tribute also to those who fought with Hitler's army against their own people. Apparently, someone has short memory in Moldova," the ministry's comment underlines.

Moscow noted that Moldova's decision "bewildered Russian veterans, many of whom fought with their Moldovan brothers against the Nazi plague".
