MOSCOW, March 14 (RIA Novosti) - Igor Ivanov, Russia's Security Council Secretary, and Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian National Authority leader, met in conference today. The agenda revolved round Israeli-Palestinian settlement efforts, reports the federal Security Council press service.

The Russian party highly appreciated the new Authority top's efforts to put an end to Israeli-Palestinian confrontation as soon as possible, and shift the conflict to political settlement on the Road Map basis. Russia vouches every support to such efforts.

Some progress has been made, and it must be strengthened and promoted, in particular, with due account for the recent Sharm-al-Sheikh and London conferences, stressed the negotiators.

As developments round Syria and Lebanon came up for discussion, the conferees emphatically called to comply with United Nations Security Council resolutions and decisions, in particular, Resolution No. 1559.

To implement the Taif agreement of 1989 would mean to spectacularly promote the cause, remarked Mr. Ivanov.

The conferees expressed a shared interest in stepping up bilateral partnership and closer team efforts for the sake of peace in the Middle East.
