MOSCOW, March 12 (RIA Novosti) - CEO of RAO Unified Energy Systems of Russia Anatoly Chubais is convinced that his aide Valery Pasat detained in Moldova is innocent and his detention is caused by the current bilateral situation.

Mr. Pasat is charged with breaking the law in arms trade.

These charges are nonsense, Mr. Chubais said at a press conference adding that this was his personal opinion.

"I am convinced that the situation will clear up if an unbiased investigation is carried out," Mr. Chubais noted.

Speaking about the political aspects of Valery Pasat's arrest, Anatoly Chubais said, "This is closely connected with the recent developments in Russian-Moldovan relations."

"It seems that the forces interested in a bilateral conflict are dominating Moldova. In my opinion, this is a dead-end, useless and harmful for both countries," Anatoly Chubais stressed.

"I am sure that Russia is much stronger and only absolutely irresponsible politicians can doubt this fact," he added.

Mr. Chubais insists on the release of Mr. Pasat.

Moldova's Prosecutor General's Office announced Saturday that it detained Valery Pasat in connection with its inquiry into a sale of 21 MIG-29 jet fighters.

"This transaction incurred the Moldovan budget damages to the tune of tens of millions of US dollars. The transaction took place in 1997 when Mr. Pasat was holding the post of Moldova's Defense Minister," a spokesman for the Prosecutor General's Office told RIA Novosti.

The Moldovan Prosecutor General's Office denies any link between Mr. Pasat's arrest and his current activity as Anatoly Chubais' aide.
