BISHKEK, March 7 (RIA Novosti's Yulia Orlova) -The opposition forces in Kyrgyzstan believe that the country is facing an extremely difficult situation and therefore call for convening an extraordinary session of parliament to ensure stability in the republic, leader of the Atazhurt (Fatherland) opposition political party Roza Otunbayeva said in Bishkek on Monday.

"We can openly say that the situation is going out of control. Therefore, the leaders of the opposition movement have called on the country's parliament, a legislative branch of power, to take part in stabilizing the current state of affairs," she said.

The opposition sees one of the options for normalizing the course of developments in convening an extraordinary session of both chambers of national parliament and extending its powers for another year in order to call an early presidential election. After that, they suggest holding a repeat parliamentary election.

Opposition leaders claim that 70 percent of MPs are in favor of this idea.

"We are ready to lead the people but we wish to act within the bounds of the Constitution," one of the opposition leaders, former Education Minister Ishengul Boldzhurova, pointed out. According to her, "the authorities are going to undertake extraordinary measures to remain in power."

The opposition continues to stage mass rallies across the country. The strategic Bishkek-Torugart highway linking Kyrgyzstan with China remains blocked by protesters for the second day running. On Monday, some 300 people took to the streets in Karakol, the capital of the Issyk-Kul region.

Mass protests also continue in southern Kyrgyzstan. Supporters of candidates who lost recent elections in the Jalal-Abad region seized the office of the local administration. The region's governor, Jusupbek Sharipov has set up a temporary office in the local police headquarters.

Officials in Bishkek assert that the situation is fully under control. On Saturday, PrimeMinister Nikolai Tanayev said that the Government would "not allow anyone to destabilize the situation."

The first round of Kyrgyzstan's parliamentary elections took place on February 27. The second round is scheduled for March 13.
