PEOPLE ABROAD MUST STOP FEARING RUSSIA

TURIN, March 6 (RIA Novosti, Sergei Startsev) - People abroad must finally stop fearing Russia, announced on Sunday in Turin Mikhail Gorbachev at the closing of the international conference "1985-2005: twenty years that changed the world" dedicated to the anniversary of perestroika in Russia.

"Russia is interested in cooperation and partnership with Europe and the United States. The West should not be afraid of another threat coming from Russia," Mr. Gorbachev announced. He underlined that Russia can be criticized, but at the same time "deserves responsible attitude on the part of other countries." In addition, Mr. Gorbachev pointed out at the complexity of the reform process in Russia.

The international conference dedicated to the 20th anniversary of perestroika was held in Turin by the initiative of the World Politics Forum presided by Mikhail Gorbachev.

During three days of the conference, prominent politicians and public activists, political experts and journalists discussed the impact of perestroika on the entire world, and also urgent global issues of today, such as international terrorism, deep ecological crisis and regional conflicts on various continents.

The leaders of the World Politics Forum plan to send a special report on discussed issues to the UN Secretary General's office.
