GEORGIA READY TO OFFER TERRITORY FOR NATO BASES

TBILISI, March 4 (RIA Novosti) - Georgia is ready to offer NATO its territory for temporary use, chairman of the defense and security committee of the Georgian parliament Givi Targamadze told Novosti-Georgia. He was commenting on the conclusion of the Georgian-NATO agreement on giving support to the NATO forces and personnel and ensuring transit by the receiving side.

"Practice shows that there are, even in countries unfriendly to NATO, provisional bases used by NATO countries. We have no such problems and will, certainly, allow to friendly countries temporary use of bases on our territory", Mr. Targamadze said.

Asked if Georgia has the infrastructure for NATO transit shipments under the agreement, he said: "Of course we have the infrastructure, though it has to be updated to meet the NATO standards. I think the Alliance will help us in this matter".

Earlier, Georgian Foreign Minister Salome Zurabishvili said that the agreement on transit traffic across Georgia for the carriage of supplies to the NATO forces in Afghanistan does not intend locating NATO bases in Georgia.

The agreement provides for via traffic by land, air and sea, sets the rules of transit. The NATO headquarters noted the special importance of the agreement in view of enlarging the mission of the international forces in the western part of Afghanistan.
