MOSCOW, February 27 (RIA Novosti) - The world is to offer practical assistance to Palestine, said Alexander Yakovenko, official spokesman of Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. RIA Novosti interviewed him with an upcoming visit to the UK by Sergei Lavrov, Russia's Foreign Minister.

While in Great Britain, Mr. Lavrov will attend an international conference on assistance to the Palestinian National Authority, said the diplomat.

"The Sharm-al-Sheikh conference of February 8 gave a good start to normalizing Israeli-Palestinian relations. The Parties are making considerable efforts to implement its understandings, and these efforts fully deserve approval. Now, the world is to vouch readiness to help Palestinians through practical work," stressed Mr. Yakovenko.

Russia intends to use the London forum for encouraging the latest hopeful trends in Israeli-Palestinian affairs, he added.

"Israeli-Palestinian relations are starting to improve, and Israel intends to pull out its troops from the Gaza strip. Now, the London conference is to build a bridge from those efforts to full implementation of the Road Map."

Our reporter asked Mr. Yakovenko about prospects of material aid to Palestine. Prospects for donations to the Palestinian National Authority from the entire world will also appear on the London agenda, and Russia is determined to confirm its intention for efficient assistance in many fields, was the reply.

The conference for assistance to the Palestinian National Authority is gathering in London, March 1, at a foreign-ministerial level. The Palestinian top, the four international mediators of Middle East settlement-Russia, the USA, the European Union and the United Nations-and key donors have been invited to attend. Israeli participation is not envisaged, said the informant.
