SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO, RUSSIA'S STRATEGIC PARTNER IN THE BALKANS

BELGRADE, February 16 (RIA Novosti) - The Serbia and Montenegro Community is the strategic partner of Russia in the Balkans, plenipotentiary of the Russian president in the Central Federal District Georgi Poltavchenko has said on results of talks with Boris Tadic, President of Serbia.

Russia is interested in taking part in the development of the economy of Serbia, including the process of privatization, Mr.Poltavchenko told the press conference after the meeting.

The sides have voiced interest in the development of contacts above all in energy and gas.

The plenipotentiary also said that Russia is very much interested in the banking sector of Serbia, particularly the formation of joint banks. Good prospects also exist for interaction in road building, steel making, farming and tourism, Mr.Poltavchenko noted.

Mr.Tadic said that the free trade regime could provide a mighty impetus for bilateral economic cooperation.

As regards international problems, Mr.Poltavchenko said: "Russia supports the constructive position of Serbia on Kosovo, consisting in the protection of its national interest in the autonomy".

In turn, Mr.Tadic said: "The foreign policy of Belgrade bases on balanced-out relations between Brussels, Washington and Moscow".

On Wednesday Mr.Poltavchenko arrived in Belgrade with a two-day visit from Montenegro's capital Podgorica in the company of a small group of Russian businessmen. A meeting with Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica is scheduled also for Wednesday.
