PETROZAVODSK, February 5 (RIA Novosti-Northwest, Alexei Uyukone) -The program of the festival to be opened this Saturday includes musical and dance performances, exhibitions, costume balls, and sport competitions.

Among other things, the program features an art exhibition displaying works by young artists from the Murmansk region, a jewelry exhibition `Silver Kostroma` presenting exhibits from the Krasnoselsk museum, contests for the best weathercock, fairy light and snowman, fishermen's competitions, snowmobile races, a ski festival and other events.

The program's highlight will be the snow&ice sculpture contest attended by sculptors from all over Russia. The results of the contest will be announced on February 12 in Petrozavodsk's central square under the symbolic `hypoborean` tree, with the competing sculptures being set up nearby. The audience will see the festival's flag hoisted and listen to the festival's hymn sung, with the ceremony ending in gala fireworks.

The festival borrowed its name from the ancient Mediterranean culture which used the word to designate "the country on the other side of the northern wind (Borei)".

Petrozavodsk's local government who has organized the festival sees it as an event symbolizing unity of all `hypoboreans` (northerners) and promoting cultural exchange between countries and nations.

The festival's program features about 30 cultural events to be held over the next month. The festival will bring together musicians, artists, sculptors and athletes from Moscow, St.Petersburg, Vologda, Murmansk and other Russian regions as well as from the USA, Australia, Italy and Finland.
