YUGANSK AUCTION: RUSSIA TO THANK TEXAS COURT, SAYS PUTIN'S ADVISER

MOSCOW, December 30 (RIA Novosti) - Russia ought to thank the Houston law court for its verdict on the Yuganskneftegaz auction, says Andrei Illarionov, presidential economic adviser. "If there were no Texas court, it would be necessary to invent it-the court is working for this country. It warns us about disastrous fruit of certain decisions," he stressed in an Echo of Moscow radio live cast tonight.

"To thank the Texas court and its judge is the only thing we can do. The judge is doing all she can for Russia to keep it away from a monstrous pit to whose brink this country has been pushed," added the expert.

With a long-established reputation for scathing criticisms, Mr. Illarionov bravely came out a few days ago against the latest economic decisions of the Russian government. He called the "fraud of the year" the notorious Yugansk auction. An obscure private company won it to purchase the drowning Yukos' principal production branch. Rosneft came up next-and promptly bought up the dark horse.

"All that was done with monstrous incompetence and an utter lack of professionalism. It's good, in a way, that the thing was done so badly. Everyone sees now that there was nothing behind the deal but thirst to snatch private property. The whole affair boiled down to private property expropriated. 'Fraud' is the only word for it. We know such things from Russian history," the expert said today to comment on his previous statement.
