OSCE SHOULD WORK OUT SINGLE CRITERIA TO ASSESS ELECTIONS

MOSCOW, December 28 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow deems it necessary to work out single criteria of assessing elections on the OSCE space, official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Yakovenko said on Tuesday.

He called in question the objective approach of international observers to elections in various countries referring to obvious differences in assessments of the elections in Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

"This causes the necessity to work out single objective criteria of unbiased assessing of elections without double standards on the space of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe on the basis of the Copenhagen Document of 1990. We always draw the attention of our partners to this," Mr. Yakovenko stressed.

According to him, the Russian delegation in Vienna has made a relevant proposal. "This goal can be achieved if there is political will," he emphasized.

"Moreover, the OSCE and CIS should consider possibilities of interaction on the basis of their experience in the sphere of elections, including the convention on the standards of democratic elections in the Commonwealth of Independent States," Alexander Yakovenko said.
