TEHRAN, December 26 (RIA Novosti) - President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Khatami criticized a draft of UN reforms introduced by several countries.

"We stand for the revision of UN provisions, but only those that do not consider interests of oppressed countries and therefore are unfair. However, the latest initiatives on UN reforms allow certain powers, which use forcible methods to solve their problems under the aegis of lawful resolutions adopted by the UN, to interfere in internal affairs of other countries at their own discretion," says Mr. Khatami a statement made on Sunday.

In his opinion, "the proposed reforms will allow these powers to occupy other countries and impose their interests under ungrounded pretexts, which is unacceptable."

Mr. Khatami expressed hope that UN Secretary General Kofi Annan would stand against the proposed changes that solely serve interests of world powers, neglect interests of other nations and harm the principles of fairness.

At present, the UN conducts discussions of the possible large-scale organizational reform and expansion of its Security Council membership.
