CIS PUBLIC IMPATIENT FOR PRACTICAL ANTI-TERROR SUCCESS: PUTIN

MOSCOW, December 24 (RIA Novosti) - CIS countries' public is not waiting for law enforcement bodies' high-sounding declarations-it looks forward to actual breakthroughs in anti-terror efforts, said President Vladimir Putin. He was addressing a Kremlin session of the Commonwealth Interior Ministers' Council as the conferees gathered to blueprint anti-terror teamwork for next year.

"Your alliance concerns one of the most essential fields in the post-Soviet area. All our countries are getting through a problem-laden time. Economic developments leave much to be desired. All those problems tell on law enforcement. That was so in all times, and in all countries," Mr. Putin went on.

"Terrorism is among the main threats to our countries and the entire world," he emphasized.

President Putin and his counterparts of the other CIS countries regularly discuss anti-terror efforts. "There is not a single meeting at which we wouldn't discuss the issue. We have a good basis to join efforts for law enforcement. There is a 1999 declaration on anti-terror combat.

"You are facing other challenges, too-to give a rebuff to organized crime, drug trafficking, and illegal migration," added the President.
