MOSCOW, December 20 (RIA Novosti's Alexander Shishlo) - The relations between Belgium and Russia are excellent, both in political and economic terms, Belgian Foreign Minister Karel de Gucht believes.

In a RIA interview ahead of his official visit to Moscow, December 21 and 22, the minister noted that there was a growing interest in Russia on the part of Belgian businesses, large and small.

Mr. de Gucht said Belgian exports to Russia in January through August 2004 had grown by 23 percent, describing this as "a highly positive sign for our trade relations." Russian exports to Belgium have been on the rise, as well, he said. "Thus, trade and economic relations between our two countries develop quite well," the minister said.

Some time ago, Russia and Belgium developed a joint program of actions in the political arena. This program expires this year, but the sides are going to extend it into the next four years, Mr. de Gucht said.

"My visit, among others, fits in with this plan, and is aimed at establishing new contacts that will enable us to activate a new cooperation program," pointed out the Belgian minister.
