TAJIKISTAN OVERCOMES THE CONSEQUENCES OF CIVIL WAR

DUSHANBE, December 19 (RIA Novosti) - The industrial output of Tajikistan increased by 13.8% during January-November 2004.

According to statistical data published by Tajik State Statistics Committee, production of consumer goods grew by 11.7%, including food production - by 12.4% and non-food consumer goods - by 5.3%

In 2003, Tajik GDP increased by 10.2% compared to 2002. Real per capita income of the population went up by 28.4%.

Foreign trade turnover during the same period constituted $2,114.8 million, a 42.3% increase compared to the same period of 2003. The amount of exports in 2004 equals $840.6 million, imports -- $1,274.2 million.

Foreign countries dominated the exports sector with 83.3% of the volume ($700 million).

In contrast, CIS countries dominated the import sector with 69% of the overall volume ($879.7 million).

Russia remains the major external trade partner of Tajikistan - with trade volume of $359,300.1 thousand. Russian exports constituted $53,733.3 thousand, imports -- $305, 566.8 thousand.

The trade deficit during 11 months of 2004 amounted to $433,6 million.

During January-November 2004, the republic produced 15 billion and 161 million kilowatts of electricity, a .2 increase compared to 2003. According to Tajik Energy Ministry official Rashid Gulov, 718 million kilowatts were exported to other countries: 639.6 million kilowatts - to Uzbekistan, 53.9 million - to Kyrgyzstan, 24.5 million - to Afghanistan

Mr. Gulov also reported that the government of Pakistan showed interest in supply of Tajik electricity to Pakistan. However, the implementation of such a project will demand the construction of an electric power line through Afghanistan to Pakistan because Tajikistan does not have a common border Pakistan

"The Pakistani side proposes the construction of a power line from Gorny Badakshan through the Vakhan gorge to the northern part of Pakistan. In its turn, the Tajik side proposes to construct a power line through Kabul to Peshavar (an administrative center of a North-West Frontier province of Pakistan located 250 kilometers to the south east of the Afghan capital). The sides have not adopted the official decision on the issue, so far," he underlined.

In January-November 2004, Tajikistan received 55.1 thousand tons of humanitarian aid from 37 countries worth $59.7 billion.

Since the beginning of 2004, thirty eight thousand and nine hundred tons of flour, two thousand and one hundred tons of vegetable oil, a thousand tons of wheat, and also shoes, clothing and bed linen were distributed among poor and people who suffered the consequences of natural disasters.

In addition, the regions affected by natural disasters were supplied with transportation means, fuel, medical equipment and medicine.

Among major donors assisting Tajikistan are the United States - 53.2%, Russia - 9.4%, Kazakhstan - 8.8%, the Netherlands - 2.7%, Denmark - 2.3%, Iran - 1.8%, and France - 1.3%.
