As Interpol legal experts see the matter, the Russian inquiry and a related detention warrant ought to remain valid. Interpol rules require, however, the warrant removed from its website for as long as information analyses require, so the organisation has withdrawn it.
Legal motives are the only Interpol proceeds from, leaving political and all others aside, points out the statement.
The Russian top military prosecutor's office has duly replied to the Interpol inquiry on the Timoshenko affair. The inquiry concerned a criminal case on which a resolution was made on the suspect's liability, top prosecutor Alexander Savenkov said to the media on a previous occasion.
Yulia Timoshenko is accused of bribing five senior officers of Russia's Defence Ministry board for material resources and foreign economic contacts to purchase construction materials at bloated prices. There is irrefutable bribery evidence, stressed Mr. Savenkov.
Yulia Timoshenko, member of the Supreme Rada (Ukrainian parliament), was formerly Unified Ukrainian Power Grid corporation head and her country's Deputy Prime Minister. As the investigation has it, she gave the five Russian officers bribes varying from $500 to $5,000 in 1999, when she was Power Grid CEO, to raise prices as the Defence Ministry was making purchases from her corporation. A resultant contract thus amounted to $300 million-ninety million above actual costs, on investigators' estimation.
