KIEV, December 10 (RIA Novosti's Victor Demidenko) - Ukraine's parliament strongly amended the presidential election law, December 8. The amendments, in fact, suit only one hopeful-Victor Yuschenko, Victor Yanukovich his namesake and rival said to a news conference in Kiev today.

"We took no part in the drafting, and the law came out violating citizens' constitutional rights. The procedure suits only one candidate," he said.

As was announced previously, the amended law means to rule out, or at least bring down, ballot rigging in a repeated presidential runoff, due December 26.

Ukraine has landed in an economic crisis, warns Mr. Yanukovich. "There is no way to deny it as the economy reflects politics like a mirror. Political instability brings an economic crisis in its wake. A bad blow has been dealt on the economy, and it needs some time to get over."

Mr. Yanukovich is sure "the government will do all it can to ease that blow and keep the economy afloat".

Prime Minister Victor Yanukovich is now vacationing to have his hands free for the pre-election campaign.
