The acceptance report was signed by Col.-Gen. Vladimir Pronichev, FSB Deputy Director/Chief, Border Guard Service, and Lt.-Gen. Abdurakhmon Azimov, Chairman, State Border Guard Committee (KOGG) under the aegis of the government of Tajikistan.
"Tajik border guards assumed control of a 881.6-km stretch of the border and received a RR230 million worth of equipment and materiel free of charge [the dollar is worth 27.98 Russian rubles]," Maj.-Gen. Nuralisho Nazarov, Chief, Main Staff, KOGG, told the media following the signature of the acceptance report.
He emphasized that "Russian border guards handed all necessary hardware over to the Tajik side in compliance with relevant agreements."
Nazarov stressed that there were three Russian advisors remaining in each of the units inherited by Tajiks. This was done to assist Tajik personnel in doing their job.
The transfer of the Pamirs stretch of Tajikistan's border was complete on December 5. 2005 will see Russian border guards transferring to their Tajik counterparts the Moscow and Pyandzh border guard units, whose area of operations spans a total of 454 km of the border.
Overall, Russian border guards are to hand 22 border stations and 25 posts over to their Tajik colleagues, including infrastructure required for them to mount their operations, as well as three border crossing checkpoints.
Russian border guards will carry on providing advisory assistance to their Tajik colleagues in guarding the country's border, cooperate with them in support of guarding the borders of the CIS member-states and jointly plan and conduct operations to fight illegal cross-border migration and smuggling of guns, ammunition, explosives, poisons, radioactive materials and drugs.
