KIEV, December 9 (RIA Novosti) - Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma signed a decree on the resignation of Prosecutor General Gennady Vasilyev and Deputy Minister of Economy and European Integration Oleg Gaiduk, the presidential press service reported.

Viktor Yushchenko's Our Ukraine parliamentary faction raised the question of Mr. Vasilyev's dismissal as a condition of the adoption of bills on the introduction of amendments to the electoral legislation and Ukraine's Constitution.

This demand was fulfilled. Before the voting on the bills Leonid Kuchma said that Gennady Vasilyev handed his resignation and it was accepted.

According to Gennady Vasilyev, political pressure was put on the Prosecutor General's Office.

"As Ukraine's Prosecutor General I took much effort to prevent the prosecutor bodies from being involved in political bias," Mr. Vasilyev noted.

In his words, the Prosecutor General's office was active to defend its position and the provisions of law in the conditions of strong political pressure on its bodies during the presidential elections.

"Politicians of different color" are trying to make his office responsible for the disorders in the country, he noted. The prosecutor bodies are being demanded to give an account of the fulfillment of the functions, which have nothing to do with them, Gennady Vasilyev stressed.

"I cannot allow my name and the Prosecutor General's post to be used as an element of bargaining in the current political games. I hand my resignation to the Ukrainian President," he said.
