ST. PETERSBURG, December 4 (RIA Novosti - Northwest, Dina Danilova) - Human rights commissioner of the Ukrainian Supreme Rada Nina Karpacheva believes that violations of constitutional rights and freedoms during the elections violated the situation in Ukraine.

"The Ukrainian leadership has ignored human rights for a long time. They were declared but the authorities did nothing to put them into practice," Ms. Karpacheva told journalists.

According to her, Ukrainian citizens used their right of peaceful pickets and rallies for their opinion to be heard. "People proved that they were not only an object of manipulations but also a subject of history," she emphasized.

"Whoever becomes Ukrainian President in the near future, he will not be able to ignore the problems of human rights and freedoms anymore," Nina Karpacheva said.

In her opinion, today the main thing is to preserve Ukraine's unity and integrity.

"Ukraine has always been and will be in the geopolitical sphere of Russian, American and European interests. If the European Union ignored Ukraine for a long time and did not see its striving for European living standards, today the situation is changing for the better for Ukraine," Ms. Karpacheva noted.

She pointed out the importance of multiplicity for Ukraine for the sake of its national interests. "Ukraine should give priority to the Slavonic space, Slavonic nations and unity of our culture, traditions and spirituality," she added.

The human rights commissioner is convinced that the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis will be found. "If no foreign countries 'helped' us we would have done it much sooner," Nina Karpacheva said.

She took part in the plenary session of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
