NEW DELHI, December 4 (RIA Novosti) - In case of the UN Security Council's enlargement, its new permanent members should have the right of veto, said Russian President Vladimir Putin, currently on an official visit to India.

Otherwise, the UN reform, which aims to make the organization and its decisions more efficient, will not be full-fledged, he noted.

According to Mr. Putin, there is another reason for this.

"If we do not give the right of veto to new members of the UN Security Council, this right as an instrument of UN most effective activities might be abolished," the Russian President said.

"The loss of this instrument would mean the decrease of the UN influence and importance in the world," the head of state continued.

In his words, these decisions should be made on the basis of consensus and profound talks.

Vladimir Putin added that his position concerned India as a possible candidate for the UN permanent membership.
