NO FOREIGN CURRENCY AT EXCHANGE OUTLETS IN KIEV

KIEV/MOSCOW, December 2 (RIA Novosti) - On Thursday all foreign currency, including Russian roubles, was out of reach at exchange offices in Kiev.

Currency could only be sold but, dollars, euros, pounds sterling, yen and even roubles were not to be bought for love or money. The reason was not disclosed.

Meanwhile, the rate of the Ukrainian hrivna to the dollar has in recent weeks stuck at 5.4 hrivnas/dollar. As to the Russian rouble, the disparity is great: some banks are buying 1,000 roubles for 180 hrivnas like a month ago, others at 195 hrivnas.

Kiev ATM's are still limiting cash withdrawals: not more than 1,000 hrivnas (about 180 dollars) can be withdrawn daily. Many ATM's in the city centre were out of work on Thursday, the RIA Novosti correspondent observed.

Quite a surprise is in store for Ukrainian nationals coming to the Russian capital these days. Exchange offices adjacent to the Kiev railway station have last week axed the purchase rate of the hrivna: four and even 3.5 roubles is offered for a hrivna. A week ago it was over five roubles in Moscow.
