PUTIN AGAINST NEW DIVISION LINES IN EUROPE

LISBON, November 23 (RIA Novosti) - "EU expansion is no discontent to Russia," Putin said at a joint press-conference with the Portuguese prime minister. "What really matters is preventing the build-up of new division lines in Europe."

"One prominent figure in a tsarist government said once that Russia had only two allies: the army and the Navy. I wish these times would go into oblivion and equitable relations with all partners would be established," said the president.

Vladimir Putin hopes that Russia's relations with the new leadership of the European Commission will be as favourable as those with the previous leadership. "The more so," added the Russian president, "as the man who is now presiding over the European Commission is no stranger to Portugal."

The composition of the European Commission was endorsed last week, with Jose Manuel Barrozo as its head.
