MOSCOW, November 23 (RIA Novosti) - "The response of radical Ukrainian opposition to [presidential] election returns is extremely alarming, and sends one into consternation with public demands not to recognise the poll and null it," Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs press and information department says in a statement circulated tonight.

Ministerial PR express regret that "those demands, aimed to destabilise the situation, not merely find support from spokesmen of particular countries and international agencies but are whipped up""

The statement calls radicals in and outside Ukraine to realise that building up tensions and appeals to violent action may bring the developments to an edge and result in dire consequences.

"What all political forces-mainly the opposition-need is restraint, wise statesmanship, and responsibility to the nation. They are to put up with its will, as the election expressed it, and put an urgent end to unconstitutional appeals and action," says the ministry.

As it points out, Victor Yanukovich won the poll, according to the Central Election Commission. Many observers from Russia, other CIS countries, and numerous organisations were monitoring the ballot. The election was valid despite close competition. They are at one about that. As the poll showed, Ukrainians had every chance, guaranteed by general and equal suffrage, to freely express their will, and they used that chance to the full. The election complied with the national legislation. Despite whatever trespasses, it was a free, transparent and legitimate democratic poll, says the statement.
